What is the Green Tree Python
A Green Tree Python is a non-poisonous, nocturnal, tree dwelling snake, meaning they hunt at night and live most of their life in trees. This small 1m long snake is a beautiful lime green which is what they're most know for. From when they are born these python are a yellow and can change their colours within 24 hour after birth. This python hunts actively in trees for birds, lizards and other tree living creatures. They ambush their prey in trees, hiding and hanging on with their strong bodies, they often eat their pray upside while hanging from the tree branch. A Green Tree Python lives in warm tropical climates and primarily resides within a rainforest, but can also be found nesting in shrubs and bushes. The Green Tree Python will hatch 15 to 25 eggs. The female will coil around the eggs providing protection and warmth.
Where are the located?
Green Pythons inhabit monsoon rainforests of Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya and are also found in a tiny area of Cape York Peninsula in Australia. The GTPs (green tree python)spend most of their lives in the tree top on branches in the understory. Only going to the undergrowth to move from tree to tree.
Why are they threatened? How have WE contributed with there decline?
The Green Tree Python is considered endangered in many of its native countries. The largest danger is the destruction of the rainforest also known as habitat loss. Habitat loss is one of the most common ways that animals are becoming endanger. Habit loss is when tree are cut down for products or land space for house and factory anything. Where they live because a Green Tree Python does not survive outside of a warm tropical climate. Other dangers to the snake include hunting by large birds of prey and indigenous tribes who utilize the snake for food, skin trade, and medical beliefs.
How can The Green Tree Python be helped? What can WE do?
The green tree python is not the most common known snakes. If young and old people where educated then they would understand how important these reptiles are. The green tree python is a creature that you can keep as a pet, if people had these pythons as pet then everyone would understand how to look after them and care for them.
